FinnAccountings vs Sage

Sage is a full accounting suite with genuine Irish payroll and thirty years of practice relationships. FinnAccountings is VAT and bookkeeping preparation for self-employed professionals. Here is where each genuinely wins.

Last reviewed 20 August 2026

Sage is the incumbent that Irish and UK accountants grew up with, and it bundles more than any competitor on this site: ledger, payroll, and — unlike Xero — first-party Irish payroll. If you employ people in Ireland, that bundling is a serious argument and we will not talk you out of it. Sage is also open about how it grows. Its half-year results to 31 March 2026 attribute a 102% renewal rate by value to "increased sales to existing customers, including the growing adoption of AI-powered features and targeted price rises". FinnAccountings does something much narrower: it organises transactions and receipts, prepares VAT and bookkeeping records for Ireland and the UK, and hands cleaner packs to your accountant.

Overview

What each product actually is

Two different jobs: one keeps the books, the other gets them ready.

FinnAccountings

VAT and bookkeeping preparation for one-person businesses

FinnAccountings is built for contractors, consultants, freelancers, and one-person limited companies in Ireland and the UK. You connect a business bank account with Open Banking, upload receipts, and AI suggests categories, matches receipts to transactions, and flags what is missing before a VAT period closes.

The output is a reviewed record set: VAT return drafts, bookkeeping packs, and Form 11 or Self Assessment prep that you or your accountant check and submit. A Chartered Accountant team provides insight on AI responses and AI-generated documents, and nothing is final until you approve it.

What it deliberately is not: a general ledger, a payroll bureau, or a practice suite. There are no statutory accounts, no inventory, no project costing, and no direct submission to Revenue ROS or HMRC from the product.

Best suited for

  • Sole traders, contractors, and consultants who do not employ anyone
  • VAT-registered self-employed people whose real problem is receipts and period deadlines
  • One-person limited companies that already have an accountant for filing and sign-off
  • People who found Sage heavier than their business needs
  • Anyone who wants to see why an AI suggestion was made before accepting it

Sage

Established accounting and payroll software for the UK and Ireland

Sage has been selling accounting software in the UK and Ireland for decades and covers far more ground than a bookkeeping tool: Sage Accounting for small businesses, Sage 50 for the established desktop and hybrid base, Sage Payroll including genuine Irish payroll, and Sage Intacct for mid-market finance teams.

The market position is mature. In its half-year results to 31 March 2026, Sage reported UK and Ireland revenue of £297m within a £395m regional segment, subscription penetration of 90%, and a renewal rate by value of 102% — a business that grows mainly by selling more to the customers it already has.

Sage has also moved early on AI, shipping Sage Copilot alongside named agents for accounts payable, close, and finance intelligence, and it has introduced pricing models for partner-developed agents on the platform. Its own chief executive has publicly argued that accountants will not trust black-box AI, which is a position we agree with.

Best suited for

  • Irish businesses that need PAYE Modernisation payroll and the books from one vendor
  • Employers of any size in either market who want payroll bundled with accounting
  • Established businesses already on Sage 50 that want continuity rather than migration
  • Practices and their clients who want a single vendor across bookkeeping, payroll, and accounts production
  • Growing companies that will eventually need mid-market finance software
  • Anyone who needs statutory accounts, stock, or multi-entity reporting

Feature comparison

FinnAccountings vs Sage, feature by feature

Prices and plan details reflect your region. Where the other product is stronger, the verdict says so.

VAT returnsSage wins. Direct submission in both markets beats a reviewed draft.FinnAccountingsPartialReconciles the period and prepares bi-monthly (Ireland) or quarterly (UK) VAT return drafts with anomaly and gap checks. You or your adviser submit to Revenue or HMRC — there is no direct submission from the product.SageIncludedProduces the Irish VAT 3 from the ledger and supports submission to Revenue Online Service, with the bi-monthly cycle handled natively.
AI bookkeepingEven, and pointed at different users. Sage automates work for finance teams; we focus AI on VAT prep and gap-spotting for a single owner, and show the working.FinnAccountingsIncludedAI categorises transactions, matches receipts, and flags missing information, with Irish and UK tax assistants for questions. Suggestions show the reasoning behind them, a Chartered Accountant team reviews AI output, and you approve before anything is final.SageIncludedSage Copilot plus named agents for accounts payable, close, and finance intelligence, included in the subscription rather than charged separately, with a partner marketplace for third-party agents on the way.
Receipt scanningRoughly even on capture. Persistent mobile stability complaints in UK and Irish reviews are the practical difference, since capture usually happens on a phone.FinnAccountingsIncludedUpload or photograph receipts, have them read and matched to bank transactions, and see a per-period list of transactions still missing a receipt before the VAT deadline.SageIncludedReceipt and invoice capture with automatic data extraction and matching into the ledger, available across the Accounting range.
Bank feedsSage edges it on breadth and years of feed maturity in both markets.FinnAccountingsIncludedRead-only Open Banking connections to major Irish and UK banks, with 1 connection on Starter and 5 on Professional.SageIncludedOpen Banking feeds for the main Irish banks, backed by a long-standing Irish presence and local support.
PayrollSage wins outright, and this is the single biggest reason to choose it. If you employ anyone in Ireland, Sage bundles what we and Xero both leave to a separate product.FinnAccountingsPartialOptional PAYE Modernisation and RTI payroll drafts on the Enterprise plan, including employer PRSI, USC, and National Insurance deductions. It is not a payroll bureau and does not submit to Revenue or HMRC.SageIncludedGenuine Irish payroll for PAYE Modernisation, including RPN retrieval and payroll submissions to Revenue — the capability Xero does not offer in Ireland at all.
Tax filingSage wins, mainly because its practice range covers the filing steps our product deliberately stops short of.FinnAccountingsPartialPrepares draft Form 11, Self Assessment, and corporation tax packs from your organised records for you or your qualified adviser to review and submit. AI drafts carry no legal accountability, so filings still need professional sign-off.SagePartialHandles VAT 3 and payroll submissions to Revenue. Form 11 and CT1 are practice work, filed through ROS by you or your accountant — often using Sage's own accounts production and tax tools at the practice end.
Accountant collaborationSage wins on depth and incumbency — many Irish and UK practices already run on it. We aim at cleaner hand-offs rather than shared ledger access.FinnAccountingsIncludedExport-ready packs, a review queue, and a missing-information list built so your accountant asks fewer questions. Chartered Accountant insight sits on top of AI output before you share.SageIncludedDecades of practice relationships in Ireland and the UK, a partner programme, and accounts production and practice management tooling that lets a firm run the whole client lifecycle inside Sage.
PricingGenuinely hard to call, because Sage's list prices are not readily comparable. Sage bundles more; it also raises prices on existing customers as a stated growth lever. Price the three-year cost, not year one.FinnAccountingsPartialStarter €49, Professional €79, and Enterprise €199 per month, billed in euro. 14-day free trial, and yearly billing gives two months free.SagePartialSage publishes Irish pricing on its own site; we could not retrieve it programmatically on the review date and do not republish figures we have not verified. Price the bundle you actually need — accounting plus Irish payroll — rather than the entry tier alone.

Pros and cons

The honest trade-offs

Neither product is the right answer for everyone — these are the compromises you accept with each.

FinnAccountings

Pros

  • Built for one-person businesses rather than scaled down from an enterprise suite
  • Designed around VAT periods rather than a chart of accounts — you see what is organised and what is missing
  • AI categorisation and receipt matching with visible reasoning you approve before anything is final
  • Chartered Accountant insight on AI responses and AI-generated documents
  • Ireland and the UK priced in euro and pounds, with Revenue and HMRC rules handled natively
  • Private document vault: uploads are sealed before storage, so staff and cloud consoles see locked files

Cons

  • No first-party payroll bureau — payroll is drafts only, and only on the Enterprise plan
  • Not a general ledger — no statutory accounts, inventory, projects, or multi-currency consolidation
  • No direct filing to Revenue ROS or HMRC; you or your qualified adviser submit the return
  • No desktop product and no path into mid-market finance software as you grow
  • A newer product with a much smaller accountant network and little independent review history
  • Nothing to offer a business with employees, stock, or multiple entities

Sage

Pros

  • Genuine first-party Irish payroll — the clearest gap in Xero's Irish offering and something we do not match
  • Bundles ledger, payroll, and accounts production from one vendor, which Sage itself credits for Sage 50 growth
  • Very deep Irish and UK accountant relationships built over decades
  • A real upgrade path from small business through to Sage Intacct in mid-market
  • Sage Copilot and named AI agents included rather than sold as a separate AI subscription
  • Statutory accounts, stock, projects, and multi-entity reporting all available in the range

Cons

  • Sage's own half-year results credit growth partly to "targeted price rises", and subscribers on Sage's community forum report steep year-on-year increases
  • Mobile app reliability complaints have persisted in UK reviews from 2018 through to 2026 — freezes and crashes mid-invoice that lose work
  • Silent logout and a non-functional "keep me signed in" setting appear in both UK and Irish reviews across the same period
  • The product range is wide and confusing — Accounting, 50, Payroll, and Intacct solve overlapping problems at very different prices
  • Heavier than a one-person business needs, with a chart of accounts and terminology aimed at bookkeepers
  • Official list prices are not retrievable programmatically, which makes like-for-like comparison harder than it should be

Recommendation

Which should you choose?

Pick by the shape of your business, not by feature count.

Choose Sage if

You need payroll and a ledger from one vendor, especially in Ireland, or you are already invested in the Sage range.

  • You employ people in Ireland and want PAYE Modernisation payroll bundled with the books
  • You employ people in the UK and want RTI payroll in the same platform
  • You already run Sage 50 and migration would cost more than it saves
  • You need statutory accounts, stock, projects, or multi-entity reporting
  • Your accountant runs their practice on Sage and would rather not change
  • You expect to grow into mid-market finance software

Choose FinnAccountings if

You are a business of one, you do not run payroll, and your real problem is receipts and VAT periods.

  • You are a sole trader, contractor, consultant, or one-person limited company
  • You have no employees, so bundled payroll is not worth paying for
  • You do not want to maintain a chart of accounts or learn double-entry bookkeeping
  • You want AI suggestions with visible reasoning and Chartered Accountant insight
  • You already have an accountant to submit returns and want to hand them cleaner records
  • You want predictable pricing in euro or pounds with the renewal rate stated up front

Consider both if

A few businesses genuinely run Sage for payroll and something lighter for the owner's own records.

  • You need Irish payroll from Sage but find its bookkeeping heavier than your own admin requires
  • Your accountant works in Sage while receipts and VAT prep still eat your evenings
  • You accept the trade-off: two subscriptions instead of one, so only worth it if the time saved is real

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions when choosing between FinnAccountings and Sage.

Is FinnAccountings a Sage alternative?

For a self-employed person who needs VAT and bookkeeping preparation and does not run payroll, yes. If you employ people — particularly in Ireland — Sage bundles first-party PAYE Modernisation payroll with the books and we do not. That is a real advantage and you should weight it heavily.

Which is better for Irish businesses?

It depends entirely on whether you employ anyone. Sage has genuine Irish payroll, deep Irish practice relationships, and direct VAT 3 submission to ROS, which makes it the stronger choice for an employer. For a sole trader or one-person company with no payroll, most of what you would pay Sage for goes unused, and a preparation-focused product is a better fit.

Why does this page not list Sage's prices?

Because sage.com refused every automated request we made on 20 August 2026, so we could not verify current list prices from source. We do not republish competitor pricing from third-party roundups. Sage's own pricing pages are linked in the sources below. What we can cite is Sage's published half-year results, which credit growth partly to "targeted price rises".

Is Sage really putting prices up?

Sage says so itself, in a regulatory filing. Its results for the six months to 31 March 2026 attribute a 102% renewal rate by value to "increased sales to existing customers, including the growing adoption of AI-powered features and targeted price rises". Separately, subscribers posting on Sage's own community forum describe a 42% increase followed by a further 25% the next year on Sage Accounting Plus. Those forum figures are self-reported bills rather than list prices, so treat them as directional — but ask for your renewal price in writing before committing.

What do users complain about most in Sage?

Reliability and login. UK app-store reviews from 2018 through to 2026 repeatedly describe the mobile app freezing or crashing mid-invoice and losing work, and both UK and Irish reviewers report being silently logged out with the "keep me signed in" option not working. Low-star reviews are a biased sample by definition, but complaints that persist across eight years and two storefronts are worth taking seriously.

Does either product replace my accountant?

No. Both record or prepare numbers; neither takes legal accountability for what is submitted. You will still want qualified oversight — typically a Chartered Accountant in Ireland, or an ICAEW or ACCA member in the UK — to review and sign off returns and accounts.

Can I move from Sage to FinnAccountings?

You can connect your bank accounts, upload receipts, and bring exports across so current-period records are organised in FinnAccountings. Two cautions: if you run Sage payroll you will need a replacement before you cancel, and prior-year statutory accounts and ledger history should stay wherever your accountant needs them, because FinnAccountings does not maintain a general ledger.

How current is this comparison?

It was last reviewed on 20 August 2026 against Sage's published half-year results to 31 March 2026, Sage's own community forum, and public UK and Irish app-store review feeds. Where we could not reach a primary source we have said so rather than filling the gap. Check Sage's own pages before deciding.
