Student Loans Under MTD for Income Tax: Estimates Are Not Payable

HMRC Agent Update 145 clarifies how Plan 1–5 and postgraduate student loans work inside Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — quarterly estimates are not payable, and the annual charge is settled on the tax return.

Sole traders and landlords in the first Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax cohort — those with qualifying income over £50,000 — face their first quarterly update deadline on 7 August 2026. HMRC’s Agent Update issue 145 adds a practical clarification many taxpayers miss: student loan and postgraduate loan repayments appear in MTD software as estimates during the year, but those estimates are not amounts you must pay after each quarterly update.

Compatible software holds your plan type (Plan 1, 2, 4, or 5) or postgraduate loan status using data the Student Loans Company shares with HMRC. After you send a quarterly update, the tax-bill estimate can include a loan repayment figure based on income reported so far and the thresholds that apply at that time. Treat that figure as a planning signal, not a payment demand.

How quarterly estimates differ from the annual charge

HMRC’s MTD quarterly-update guidance confirms that after each update you can see an estimate of your tax bill for self-employment and property income. If you are repaying a student or postgraduate loan, your plan or loan type is added automatically so the estimate can include loan repayments.

Agent Update 145 states that quarterly updates calculate an estimate of student or postgraduate loan repayments based on income and applicable thresholds at that time — and that these estimates are not payable. After the fourth quarterly update you submit a tax return. Software then calculates the actual student or postgraduate loan charge using the annual threshold. That final figure replaces the in-year estimates, forms part of your Self Assessment liability due by 31 January following the tax year, and is passed to the Student Loans Company.

If you also have PAYE employment and your employer already deducted student or postgraduate loan amounts through payroll, those PAYE deductions are pre-populated and offset against both the quarterly estimate and the final annual charge. Check the pre-populated figures against payslips before you rely on the estimate for cash planning.

What to do before the 7 August 2026 update

Confirm your plan type and whether a postgraduate loan also applies. If MTD software shows the wrong plan, raise it with HMRC or the Student Loans Company before year-end rather than ignoring mismatched estimates all year.

Keep digital income and expense records complete for 6 April to 5 July 2026 (or 1 April to 30 June if you elected calendar update periods). Quarterly updates do not require accounting adjustments, but incomplete bank feeds and missing receipts make the tax-and-loan estimate misleading.

Remember that no penalty points apply for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, but you still need to send updates before you can submit the year-end tax return. Late Self Assessment returns and late payments remain sanctionable as usual.
