No MTD for Corporation Tax: What Limited Companies Should Do Instead

HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap confirms it does not intend to introduce Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax — companies keep annual CT600 filing while HMRC modernises CT systems toward 2028.

Limited company directors still ask whether Making Tax Digital will force quarterly Corporation Tax updates in 2026. HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap answers clearly: HMRC will modernise Corporation Tax services, beginning with renewal of internal CT systems, and does not intend to introduce Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax. Instead it is developing an approach suited to the diverse CT population — from small flat-management companies to multinationals.

That is different from MTD for VAT (already live) and MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (rolling out from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000). Company Corporation Tax filing remains an annual CT600 process. There is no MTD-for-CT quarterly update deadline to diary for 2026.

What HMRC is doing on Corporation Tax instead

HMRC’s 2026 Transformation Roadmap progress update confirms work on legacy Corporation Tax systems through 2026 to 2027, expected to complete in 2028, to provide a more flexible and resilient CT platform. HMRC has also consulted on modernising and standardising company tax returns — including prescribed, fully tagged CT computations and mandatory online filing of amendments from a future date.

The CT population is deliberately treated as distinct from Income Tax Self Assessment. Roadmap language stresses consultation and early clarity before design and timing decisions. Do not assume MTD-for-ITSA software rules or quarterly update calendars will be copied onto companies.

Directors who are also sole traders or landlords in their own name may still be in MTD for Income Tax for personal self-employment or property income. Keep company CT obligations and personal MTD obligations on separate checklists.

Practical checklist for UK limited companies in 2026

Continue to file the company tax return (CT600), accounts, and computations through your usual software or agent channel. Watch HMRC notices on when amended returns must be filed online and when prescribed computation formats move from pilot toward enforcement.

If free or legacy CT filing routes closed for your company earlier in 2026, confirm your commercial software or agent can submit a complete return with accounts and computations. Incomplete or poorly tagged computations are exactly what HMRC’s standardisation work aims to reduce.

Keep digital bookkeeping current through the accounting period — not because MTD-for-CT quarterly updates apply, but because CT computations, iXBRL tagging quality, and enquiry readiness still depend on clean ledgers, bank reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
