MTD Sign-Up Outage Day Two: Enrolment Closed Until Tuesday 1pm

As of 12 September 2026, HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax sign-up service remains offline until 1pm Tuesday 15 September — use the weekend to prep digital records and diary auto sign-up letters for when enrolment reopens.

HMRC’s Sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax guidance confirms planned maintenance from 5pm Friday 11 September 2026 to 1pm Tuesday 15 September 2026. You will not be able to sign up for MTD for Income Tax during that window. As of Saturday 12 September — day two of the outage — enrolment stays closed through the weekend and Monday, with three calendar days until the Tuesday 1pm reopen.

Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 who still need MTD for the 2026 to 2027 tax year cannot complete first-time sign-up today. HMRC’s guidance confirms it will begin automatically signing up mandated taxpayers who have not yet registered from September 2026 — use this downtime to get digital records and Agent Services Account access ready for Tuesday afternoon.

Who should prepare during the weekend outage

Anyone required to use MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026 (qualifying self-employment and/or property income over £50,000) who missed Friday’s 5pm cut-off and still needs to enrol after 1pm Tuesday.

Agents clearing client enrolments through the Agent Services Account once the sign-up service returns — queue identity packs now so Tuesday afternoon is execution, not discovery.

Voluntary early adopters who want digital records in place before the next quarterly update cycle even if auto sign-up has not reached them yet.

Day-two outage checklist

Confirm qualifying income from the last Self Assessment return and whether an exemption applies so Tuesday’s enrolment does not stall on eligibility questions.

Have business start dates, addresses, and property income details ready — identity checks are the usual post-maintenance stall.

If you use an agent, authorise them in the Agent Services Account so they can sign you up as soon as the service returns at 1pm Tuesday 15 September.

Diary HMRC’s September auto sign-up letters so unexpected enrolment messages arriving over the weekend are forwarded to your adviser immediately.
