Final Week: HMRC Tax Adviser Registration Closes 18 August 2026
Seven days remain until 18 August 2026 closes HMRC’s first Modernising and Mandating Tax Adviser Registration window — a last-mile checklist for tranche-one firms still assembling AML evidence and Agent Services Account applications.
One week remains until 18 August 2026 closes the first Modernising and Mandating Tax Adviser Registration (MMTAR) window. HMRC’s GOV.UK guidance and July press release are unchanged: new tax advisers, and those interacting with HMRC without an Agent Services Account (ASA), Self Assessment agent account, or Corporation Tax agent account, need to apply in this tranche.
This is a last-mile operations note, not a new policy announcement. If your pack is still incomplete, the next seven days are for sequencing anti-money laundering supervision, Government Gateway credentials, and the ASA application — not for debating whether paid interaction with HMRC counts.
Confirm you are still in tranche one
Use HMRC’s interactive checker before you spend the week on the wrong pack. If you already hold an ASA, you do not re-register now — HMRC will contact you through that account later. If you hold an older Self Assessment or Corporation Tax agent code but no ASA, your mandatory window opens on 18 August (tranche two) with three months to apply.
Conveyancers who file or pay Stamp Duty Land Tax for clients are often in scope even when SDLT work feels incidental to conveyancing. Confirm entity ownership of any existing agent IDs across offices so an acquired practice does not discover an orphaned ASA after the window closes.
Seven-day last-mile checklist
Complete AML supervision first. HMRC cannot accept an ASA application while AML status is still pending — reversing that order is the most common end-of-window stall.
Assemble Government Gateway credentials, firm UTR and postcode, company and VAT numbers where relevant, proof of AML supervision, and the list of relevant individuals who manage or organise tax-adviser activities.
Submit the ASA application before the appointed day even if final HMRC approval follows later. During your open registration window — and while HMRC processes a timely application — you can generally continue interacting with HMRC for clients.
Do not freeze client filings while the pack finishes. Keep SDLT, VAT, and Self Assessment working papers organised so the same team can keep serving clients once the application is in.
What happens if you miss 18 August
HMRC warns that missing the relevant deadline can restrict your ability to interact with HMRC for clients. Continuing after a stop instruction can attract financial penalties. Treat a late realisation that you were in tranche one as an urgent compliance incident: check the guidance, apply as soon as the portal allows, and take advice on any client work that must pause.
Tranche-two firms should still prepare now — their three-month clock starts on 18 August. Parallel MFA work for agents who opted into 19 August activation, or who face the autumn automatic window, belongs to a separate owner inside the firm.
